Filter through paint
foto1.png
This This is the image i chose for my filtered painting, i chose this image because to me it had a really eerie vibe.
1.png
I first started working on it digitally, I made this one, where I put some other textures over the picture. I used the blending option in photoshop to get this effect, but to me it was too extreme and didn’t really give the image a filter, more just something on top.

On this piece I printed out the image, and just painted the background a sortoff solid color. I like the way it turned out, but it's just not that exciting. I feel like it didn't take away from the image but also didn't add something, since the background of the original image did not have a lot of detail in the first place.
schilderijen.jpg
For this piece I took the same print, but just started painting over it with some really bright colors to contrast the feeling of the image. I like this one more than the one on the left, but I find it to be too big of a difference to the image, because I just make up the blue and yellow stripes.
schilderijen4.jpg
This is my favorite painting I did for this assignment. I started this one digitally, where I drew over the shapes of the image, then I tried it out on a small scale, and then I made this one. It is around 60 x 60 cm, and because of that it looks really intriguing. It’s just 2 colors, but it still brings the message of the original image across. What I don't really like about this one is how roughly I painted it, in this scan you can't really see it, but in real life you can really see that my technique for painting is not great.
Painting over picture's
For these painting I am not going to say something about all 20 of them, but just some of them.

In this image, I put some paint on one piece of the paper, and just folded it a bunch. I like how the colors are the same as the ones in the picture. I also like the abstractness of it. I dont really like the way you can clearly see the fold lines. And that if you look from a distance it just looks like a mess.

For this one, I also folded the paper. I like how the colors are just clean and simple. But that's the thing that I don't like too. Because of the simple colors and not that interesting placement of the blobs, it’s just a bit boring to me.

In this painting I just painted some colors over the shapes present in the image. But i don't like it, the colors are too simple and turn really muddy when i tried to mix them on the paper. Also you can only see a small part of the reflection on the image, but it doesn't really compliment the rest of the image

I used a paper plate where I mixed all of the colors for the other paintings, and just pressed it onto the picture. This technique is also what I moved forward with the following week. I like how its not a lot of different colors, but because there so close to each other your mind come up with its own.
In this image I used a paintbrush with different color paint on it. What I like is that it's like a pattern overtop of the image, I feel like it could go on forever. What I don't like is the consistency of the color. At first the 3 colors were really clean and bright, but after reloading my brush a couple of times, it turned more muddy each time.

For this one, I really like the kind of darkness it radiates. My mind starts thinking about what's happening behind the black, and why there are 4 stones there.
In this painting I put the whole picture upside down and used a really big brush to paint large strokes on top of the image. I like how you can see the brush strokes, and can’t really see the image underneath. What I don't like is the color chosen. It’s all very dark, which makes it hard to see some depth.
So in total for this project I like the different things I tried. But one thing I could have experimented with is the size of the prints. I think i could have been interesting to see the same image’s but in a way bigger size than A3
Painting over news

For all of these I used the stamping technique discovered in the previous assignment. For this first one, I used the primary colors, but I don’t like it that much. To me it’s just that. Just some colors over a picture, without any relation to the image, which in this case could have been interesting.
For this one, I painted over everything except for the actual image. But the same thing as the last one, it didn’t really add something, since the usage of the color doesn't really mean anything to the image.

For this painting I did the paper cutout again, but this time used a dark bloody red to cover the sky in the picture. I tried some symbolism for this one, the reasoning behind the red color is kind of the dark clouds ahead for the people that were partying, since there’s a chance they got corona, but also they might get a fine from the police

scan875.2.jpg
On this piece I used a paper cutout to cover the subject of the picture and used a really bright orange to really make it pop. What I like about this one is the extreme color, and the way it is dispersed over the page.
On this painting I used the paper cutouts AGAIN, and really like the way the text works with the image. Since the text is about protection, it directly relates to the police people in the image. I also like that you can see that there is a whole article under the paint, but you can't read it. That in combination with a question in the title leaves you querious for what the article is about.
For the last one, I didn't use a cut out. This is my favorite one of the 6. I like the way the paint mimics the craters of the moon in the picture. I also like the different colors paint, its mostly fairly dark colors, with some brighter spots, which makes those spots pop out some more. I also like the fact that the paint doesn't end where the picture ends, it just keeps going.
Overall, I liked this assignment alot, because I was really free in what I wanted to paint, and what I wanted to paint over. I also like some of the end result. The thing I like the most of all of them is just the newspaper paper, it has a very specific feel and look, which I think really and to the image’s. What I did not like that much in my work is the lack of context in some of them.
Collage painting

I started this painting by making a collage of the paintings I did the week before. I made some circles and some other organic shapes. I also used repetition.
collage schildrij.jpg
In my painting I didn't really know where to start, so I just started. I started by simplifying the images in the collage to just the most prominent color and just paint that color. I waited to do the people and stamps till the end, so the other paint would be dry. I tried using the same colors as I used in the original image for the parts that I stampd. The people that were in the original collage I tried to simplify as much as possible. So I just converted them to 1 or 2 colors.
collage schildrij.jpg
What I like about this painting is the combination of the stamps and the big blobs of color. I also like some of the colors of this piece, for example I really like the color combinations and colors I used in this part on the right. I also like the idea of making a painting of a collage full of images and just using the prominent colors and make it make abstract that way
collage schildrij.jpg
What I don't like in this painting is that it’s kind of a mess. Some parts are good, as the part above, but overall it's just very messy. I think that is the case because of the stamps. JThe color of the stamps I used are dark and muddy so when it's overtop of a different dark color, it just turns into a clump of colors, as seen to the left. I also don't love the colors overall, I think that it would be a better end result if I altered the colors in the original image more so that they would be more contrasting.

I’m just going to say something about the whole assignment.
I think it's really cool that we tried something so different from what we did the rest of the blok. The results I got at first were okay, but I think the last couple of them are the best, because those were simpler, and just more filtery. Instead of just whole art piece, that just happened to be tracking my face.
